Japanese Antique Folk Tanuki Handmade Hand-Carved One-of-Kind, Miwa

SALE - NOW SAVE 20% OR MORE From our most recent acquisitions trip to Takayana and Kyoto, Japan An antique hand-carved birch wood tanuki carved by one of Japan's most heralded sculptors of wood, Toshiro Miwa (d. 1997). Carved from a birch log, this little gem exudes charm and specialness, after all he is signed by the great wood carving master Toshiro and was recently deaccessioned from the family collection and made graciously available by his daughter, Reiko Furukawa, whom we visited recently. One of a kind. Carved from one birch log. Signed bottom. Quality: Fine quality Dimensions: 6.75 inches tall and 5 inches wide. History: The Japanese raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides viverrinus), also known as tanuki in Japanese, is a subspecies of the Asian raccoon dog. As tanuki, this animal has been significant in Japanese folklore since ancient times. The legendary tanuki is reputed to be mischievous and jolly, a master of disguise and shape shifting, but somewhat gullible and absentminded. It is also a common theme in Japanese art, especially statuary and can be commonly seen in businesses as cultural symbols. Toshiro Miwa emulated the great Enku, the carver priest, and devoted most of his life to refining his wood carving skills along the same lines. He carved Buddhas and animals in his own contemporary style many which now grace the best collections in Japan and internationally. Lifetime Guarantee of Authenticity. All our Asian works of art are accompanied by our lifetime guarantee of authenticity.
