Japanese Antique Golden Gilt Bronze Temple Fire Bell "Dragon and Kanji"

About the Item

Gold gilt on bronze dragon and kanji motif With the original signed wooden collectors storage box and complimentary striker Here's a rare treasure from Japan and an unusual find- plus an excellent candidate to accent your indoor or outdoor garden space. This is an unusual antique bronze cast temple fire bell complete featuring a writhing dragon on top and unusual Kanji calligraphy motifs in relief on its sides. This bell was sourced from an old Southern Japan collection and were one of a small group of these rare bells de-accessioned by a Southern Japanese temple Community. It dates to the Taisho period and displays a fine original gold gilt patina. This Fine bell comes complete with a striker and when struck emits a pleasant resonating sound guaranteed to please you! These bells were often commissioned by wealthy families and donated as sacred gifts to temples and shrines on behalf of their family or in honor of a special family member. They may have also been used for utilitarian purposes such as summoning family members in private homes. This bell possesses remnants of the beautiful original old gold gilt patina which supports and highlights its generations old temple life. Dimensions: 8 inches tall from top of bell to the bottom and 5 inches diameter. Notice the original authentic patina inside the bottom appropriate to its age. Tone: When gently struck it gives a pleasant ring. History of Japan's temple bells: Buddhist bells known as tsurigane (hanging bells) or great bells are large bells found in Buddhist temples throughout Japan, used to summon the monks to prayer. A large & important pair of rare antique 19th century Indian Polychromed & hand carved stone Dvarpala (temple door guard) statues, circa 1850. Each statue is hand carved as a male Hindu four armed temple guard, the guards holding a mace (Gada) and one hand on a dagger (Katar), another hand holding a lotus flower to represent spiritual enlightenment. Each guard stands crossed legged on a plinth decorated with an elephant, both statues retaining old and yet brightly colored polychromed decoration, the statues are approximately 3/4 lifesize.
