About the Item

This is an old stone carved kappa statue made in Japan. It was made during the Meiji period (1860s-1900s) and has a unique presence rooted in traditional Japanese culture. Kappa are water spirits that appear in Japanese folklore. They are said to live in rivers and ponds, and despite their mischievous nature, they have been believed to bring blessings to crops and as guardian deities to protect villages. For this reason, kappa statues have been cherished as symbols that ward off misfortune and protect the community. This statue of a kappa retains the bold and rough knife marks, giving it a simple yet powerful expression. The carving marks, which are devoid of excessive decoration, quietly convey the creator's thoughts and historical background. The surface of the stone has been outdoors for many years and is dotted with moss, which gives the stone an even more profoundly charming appearance. The scenery created by the flow of time carved into the stone surface and the green moss is the very essence of the spirit of “wabi-sabi.
