A stunning find from our recent Japanese Acquistions Travels. From Hirado Kiln- home to some of Japan's finest white porcelain. We acquired this charming, monumental white ceramic Lion dog " Shishi koma-inu " with its puppy offspring from a private Japanese collector on our last trip to Japan. This sylish example is magnificent in all respects including its fine details: face, ears, body, size, and pure white color. It's previous collector commissioned a special wood storage box tomobako to protect it. It is deserving of the finest collection or special display space. Photographed in natural day light and indoors for your viewing pleasure. Dimensions: 17 inches tall and 16 inches wide and 11 inches deep Special History: Considered auspicious symbols of wealth, status, and good fortune; foo dogs—commonly referred to as shishi or koma-inu in Japan—are often seen guarding shrines, straddling the doorways of shops, and protecting public buildings. These mythical effigies have deep religious and social symbolism and can be seen in countries across Asia. Our guardian is made from the purest white ceramic , has excellent details and a wonderful surface that make it extra special. It is signed on bottom coming from Japan's most important Hirado kiln. Quality: fine condition Provenance: old Fukuoka private collection About Hirado Porcelain Hirado ware (hirado-yaki) is a type of Japanese porcelain mostly made at kilns at Mikawachi, Sasebo, Nagasaki. It was made in the former feudal Hirado Domain, and is known mainly for its sometsuke underglaze white porcelain and has a finer grain than most Japanese porcelains, allowing fine detail and thin and complicated openwork in forms. It was used for tablewares, but was especially noted for small figures. It developed supplying the domestic Japanese market in the 18th century, in the gap between the two main periods of Japanese export porcelain, and produced much of the best Japanese porcelain of the late 18th century and early 19th century.
