About the Item
Hannya (般若) Noh Mask attributed to Takada Fuki (高田 冨季, 1935–2008)
Mask: Hannya (般若)
SKU: TBA08
Size: W: 15.5 cm, H: 21 cm (W/horns 26 cm)
The Hannya mask represents a female demon who has been consumed by jealousy, rage, and sorrow. The horns on the mask signify her transformation from a woman into a demonic being. Despite the menacing features, the mask also reflects deep emotional pain, showing the character’s internal struggle.
The mask is often used in Noh and Kyogen performances, particularly in plays that revolve around themes of betrayal and intense emotional turmoil. Noh masks were traditionally carved from Japanese cypress (hinoki, Chamaecyparis obtusa) and the outer surface painted with a white pigment of powdered oyster shells (gofun) mixed with animal glue (nikawa) and water.
----
This collection of masks, although unsigned, is attributed to the renowned Noh mask maker Takada Fuki (高田 冨季, 1935–2008). Known for his exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail, Takada Fuki was a prominent figure in the world of Noh mask making, capturing the spirit and emotion of each character through his finely crafted works. Fuki trained under the esteemed master Hori Yasemon (堀安右衛門, 1899–1976), a celebrated artist in Noh mask-making, recognized for his meticulous technique and profound understanding of traditional Japanese theater. Through Yasemon’s teachings, Fuki mastered the intricate art of Noh mask making, combining the traditional style with his personal artistic touch.
Fuki’s masks are highly regarded for their expressiveness and ability to convey deep emotional resonance on stage, continuing to be an integral part of Noh performances today. His legacy, shaped by the tutelage of Hori Yasemon, remains influential in the craft of Noh mask making.

Japanese Okame Ko-Omote Wood Carved Noh Theater Mask
Located in Studio City, CA
A beautiful, wonderfully crafted, alluring mask made for Japanese Noh theatre.
This mask is handcrafted and carved from natural wood.
Ko-omote translates as "little mask" or sometimes "small face." This particular delicate featured mask (her red lips really stand out) is used for main and sometimes secondary roles when the character is a young girl or, in some cases, a supernatural being. What is also interesting about this mask is the blackened teeth which centuries ago, was customary for Japanese women to paint their teeth black after they became married.
We believe this mask dates from the mid-to early Showa period, perhaps Mejia. The mask was acquired from an antique mask...
