Heita (平太) Noh Mask attributed to Takada Fuki (高田冨季, 1935–2008) Mask: Heita (平太) SKU: TBA18 Size: W: 16 cm, H: 21 cm The Heita mask is used to portray warriors, military commanders, or powerful figures in Noh theater. The mask is characterized by its bold, exaggerated features, which emphasize the character’s bravery and strength. Heita represents an idealized image of a valiant warrior, and the mask’s facial features reflect both physical power and an intense emotional drive, often bordering on fierceness. The Heita mask is typically used for characters like samurai or warrior spirits, who remain committed to their duty and principles, even in death. The mask’s strong, bold design helps to emphasize the character’s heroism and sense of duty. Noh masks were traditionally carved from Japanese cypress (hinoki, Chamaecyparis obtusa) and the outer surface painted with a white pigment of powdered oyster shells (gofun) mixed with animal glue (nikawa) and water. ---- This collection of masks, although unsigned, is attributed to the renowned Noh mask maker Takada Fuki (高田冨季, 1935–2008).
