Rare Japanese "Signed " lantern- first we've seen Japan, a handsome old vintage Heart Roof tea garden lantern in a convenient portable size. This distinct Japanese lantern style also known as a "yukimi" lantern is a hard to find lantern with its original "Made In Japan" label still on bottom. It may be suspended from its sturdy top loop or installed on any surface using its three stabile tripod feet. Convenient hinged frontal door allows easy access for placing your favorite lighting device. An existing electrical access port is conveniently located and possible through the broad roof. Dark finish makes an attractive instllation. This beautiful lantern reflects lovely night light from within its light chamber. Dimensions: 14 inches tall to top of loop handle and 10 inches wide Good garden candidate- this sturdy heavily hand cast lantern is an ideal accent size for your favorite outdoor garden or indoor space. Provenance: Old American- Japanese garden. Many of our customers place oil candles inside the main section making a romantic and enjoyable decorative accent for entertaining friends and family. History of Japanese "Yukimi" lanterns: The Yukimi stone lantern ????, or snow viewing or water reflection lantern (yukimi doro), first appeared during the early Edo period (1603-1867). It is believed to have been used to mark water features sometimes displayed on peninsular land masses. These traditional Japanese lanterns are essential to give authenticity grace to a Japanese garden. The lantern has no shaft and instead rests on three or four legs that arch outward from its base. It usually sits relatively low to the groundand lends a sense of stability to landscapes. This style of lantern is so named because it shows its best under a mantle of snow. Although "Yukimi" is the Japanese custom of "snow-viewing", the original Japanese character may have meant water reflection or ”floating light”.
