Large Chinese Painted Pottery Horse Torso, Han Dynasty, China

About the Item

A large Chinese painted pottery figure of a horse torso, Han Dynasty (206 BC to 220 AD). An unusually large Chinese Han Dynasty horse torso, also sometimes referred to as a recumbent horse, crafted from fired red pottery, with remnants of a slip and cold painted saddle and halter designs. The figure is evocative, with an ethereal presence. The horse has been stripped down to an almost pure form, coming very close to abstraction. The boldly modeled head, with strong and clear features, is supported by an elegantly arched neck. The broad and muscular body features gracious curves throughout. A large hole to the back of the head and holes to the underside of the body indicate this horse would originally have had a mane and wooden legs, all now long rotted away. Objects such as these were used in tombs of wealthy merchants or nobles, representing their station in life. Horses were especially revered in ancient China, and were considered symbols of wealth and power. With a carved and lacquered wooden base. Height of horse only: 17.5" Provenance: Martha and Artemis Joukowsky, The Joukowsky Collection, RI Alvin Lo. & Co, Hong Kong, 1993

  • Pair Large Chinese Ming Dynasty Glazed and Painted Pottery Figures, 16th Century
    Located in Austin, TX
A striking pair of large Chinese glazed and painted pottery figures, Ming Dynasty (1368 to 1644), circa 16th century, China. The impressive and realistically modeled figures each portrayed standing upright upon a sancai (three color) glazed pedestal of kang table form. The man is dressed in a short black surcoat over a long robe and pants, a smart cap upon his head. His face is warm and welcoming, with wide eyes and a slight smile on his lips. He holds his hands out in front of him, palms up, almost as if shrugging, though presumably originally holding an object or offering, now lost. The woman of slightly smaller stature, and dressed in a longer surcoat over a long robe and skirt. She wears a fitted cap upon her head. Her hands also held out in front, grasping long lost objects. Her face is slightly more severe, with a somewhat pinched look, and slight frown upon her lips. The size of these figures is remarkable, as is the realism and attention to detail, almost as if they were modeled after real people, as opposed to the more common and generic Ming Dynasty pottery...

  • Chinese Painted Stucco Head of a Luohan, Song Dynasty, 11th Century, China
    Located in Austin, TX
A remarkable Chinese life sized painted stucco head of a luohan, Song, Liao or Jin Dynasty, circa 11th century, China. The amazingly life-like figure depicts a luohan (sometime spelled lohan), also known as an arhat, one of the original disciples of the Buddha. The elderly man has been molded in stucco with inset glass eyes and painted with idealized, if slightly exaggerated features. The unidentified luohan sports a bald, or perhaps shaved, domed head above a bulging forehead, symbolizing his vast wisdom. The wrinkles in his furrowed brow, and creases around his eyes add to his realism. The learned man stares out wisely from deep set, heavily lidded inlaid glass eyes that catch the light. The luohan has high cheekbones and a prominent jawline. His lips full and pursed as if about to speak. The corners of his mouth turned up ever so slightly in a faint smile, causing his gaunt cheeks to dimple charismatically. A series of dots above the upper lip indicate he may originally have sported a mustache of real hair. This life sized head with extremely realistic features fits into a very narrow time frame of Chinese Buddhist art. Perhaps the most recognized group of large, finely molded Chinese luohan...
