Siam, a Monumental Wooden Sitting Feline Cat Sculpture

About the Item

Siam, a monumental antique 28.5" tall wooden sitting feline cat, mid-20th century. The tall slim feline work of art carved from one block of hard, dense teakwood, with a whimsical, arched neck manner and rendered ears, eyes, snout, mouth, a bow tie, feet and tail with a dark patina from decades of time and weighing a hefty 32 pounds. Provenance: Private Southern collection. The Siamese cat has a revered history in Asian cultures. Cats were favored Chinese pets during the Song dynasty and were the esteemed pet of choice among Siam’s ruling elite marked by the breed’s sleek physical appearance and regal connection with governmental authority. On July 20th, 1948, the Siamese law making body voted to change the name of Siam to Thailand, effective in 1949.
