Thai Sukhothai Cast Bronze Buddha Head, 15th/16th Century, Thailand
About the Item
An exquisite Thai cast bronze Buddha head, Sukhothai kingdom, circa 15th century, Thailand.
The Buddha's pleasing face, with its narrow, oval shape and sharp features is exemplary of Sukhothai style. The Buddha looks outwards from downcast almost shaped eyes, the corners upswept in a dramatic fashion. A broad, slightly hooked nose sits above plump lips set in a slight smile. A pair of narrow ears with elongated, outswept earlobes frame his face.
The Buddha's hair expressed as neatly arranged rows of tight curls. A flame shaped finial surmounts the pronounced ushisha.
The bronze with a gorgeous, rightly mottled patina of chocolate brown with highlights of red cuprite and green malachite.
