About the Item

A very fine and large English 19th century Empire style gilt and patinated bronze and steel figural fireplace fender - chenet. The beautifully designed fender flanked on each end by resting Bull Mastiff dogs on a patinated rectangular plinth surmounted with a finely chased ormolu floral mount, both ends conjoined by a center steel rod with ormolu end-caps and a scrolled center finial, all above a patinated bronze stretcher. The width of the fender may be adjusted, London circa 1870-1880. Measure: Width 69 3/8 inches (176.2 cm) Height 14 inches (35.6 cm) Depth 6 inches (15.3 cm).

    Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Minor fading. A truly beautiful and rare fireplace fender. The patina on the dogs has some peeling and wear consistent with use and age. The dogs casting and the ormolu mounts are fantastic. The gilt on the plinths have some spotting an wear. Some bending on base.
