About the Item
A pair of medium-sized 17th century French Louis XIV fire dogs made of polished bronze and wrought iron. The faces on the andirons are so-called marmosets. A marmoset is an ornamental motif representing a small figure in a burlesque or extravagant posture. The marmosets are mainly found in sculpture, especially in medieval art, for example on the mercies and the butts. They were also the advisers of the French king Charles XI.
The condition of the andirons is good. They are fit for use in the fireplace.
