About the Item

Pair of andirons of the period Louis XIV, wrought iron and bronze. During the reign of Louis XIV (1651-1715), a lavish lifestyle developed in France and then spread to all the European courts. Luxury and the desire to surround oneself with beautiful objects steeped in history and symbolism became widespread. This marked the return of symbols prized in Antiquity, such as mythology and the “magical” animals that accompanied it. At the same time, in large, opulent residences such as the Palace of Versailles, little fireplaces for rooms became increasingly common. We then develop pairs of andirons that combine practicality and artistic design. At that time, they were always rectangular in shape, with a double bar. This rare pair of andirons, which has survived the centuries, is decorated with dolphins. Since ancient times, the dolphin has symbolized masculine power. During the reign of Louis XIV, it was also a tribute to royalty, as the king's heir was always given the title of Dauphin. This pair of andirons is topped with flame sculptures. Note: an old repair is visible on one of the dolphins (please see photos). Good antique condition Shipping: 38 / 20 / 56 cm 11.9 kg.
