About the Item

A rare and evocative Venetian iron hanging sign, intricately cut in the form of a stylised dragon within a rectangular frame. This piece is dated 1629, the year of the Venetian Plague, and would originally have been mounted on the exterior of a building. Such signs were often free-hanging, suspended by chains, either as protective emblems invoking the dragon as a guardian spirit or as heraldic/family crests symbolising strength and vigilance. The surface shows centuries of weathering, with layers of oxidised patina and traces of red and black pigments still visible. While much of the original lettering has faded with time, the dating remains a poignant reminder of Venice’s turbulent 17th-century history. Despite its age, the piece is structurally stable, with a remarkable presence that speaks to its historical significance. Both a collectible artefact and a striking decorative object, it embodies the resilience and artistry of Venetian craftsmanship. Period: Early 17th Century (dated 1629) Origin: Venice, Italy Material: Iron Condition: Stable, with extensive surface wear and pigment loss consistent with age. Provenance: Private collection A rare opportunity to acquire an authentic fragment of Venetian history, perfectly suited for collectors of early European artefacts, architectural salvage, or Renaissance/Baroque decorative arts.
