About the Item

Beautiful and Amazing one-of-a-kind home in the Kirkwood area of Saint Louis, Missouri. This is a wonderful example of Mid-Century modern architecture in a small living space set on .9 acre of a semi-private street. The house was designed by Mits Otsuji of the Naess & Murphy firm in Chicago. This was designed privately for his brother and Engineer, George Hasegawa. Mr. Hasegawa is now 95 years old, and has lived in this house since it was constructed. Construction began in 1958 and was completed in 1959. This was quickly featured in a Better Homes in Gardens late in 1960. The house is roughly 1600 square feet and has 3 bedrooms and 2 baths. There is a cement basement. The house has 4 sides, each 40 feet long. There are 2 large entry doors and 4 sliding glass doors. All doors are original. The windows are single pane glass, and several glass has cracks. The windows are not designed to open. The windows in the Saint Louis weather has led to condensation and water damage on the wood frames around the windows. All are still structurally sound, however you can see that they have water wear. There is one ceiling leak just beginning in the great room by the rear sliding glass door. The garage was built years later. There is a flat roof on the house and garage. The garage has no insulation, and is a simple structure with one window and vertical wood plank siding. There is room for 2 cars in the garage, and the garage door opener was replaced in the last 10 years. The house sits on a wedge with bamboo trees lining the rear of the property. The wedge is widest at the street in front of the house. The home owners by-laws do NOT allow for 2-story structures. The driveway is large and only about 200 feet long. There are no issues with the driveway. Both bathrooms work fine. The kitchen is original with St.Charles metal cabinets with birch doors. The GE metal range and controller still function. The property has been left in it's original condition. Each room has it's own closet with sliding doors. Windows line the entire structure. The HVAC is in good working order. The air conditioning unit has been changed in the last 10 years. The basement is cement walls and is unfinished. There are 3 rooms. One great room and two anti-rooms. One was used for laundry and houses the HVAC and water heater and the other is a tool area. Mr. Hasegawa's family is trying to sell this unique property with home as a FOR-SALE-BY-OWNER property and we are trying to help them reach a wider audience. The house is a wonder to walk through and be in. We spent a week in the property emptying it's contents, and we wish we could spend a few years here. It is truly impressive.
