Pair of Antique American Lightning Rods

About the Item

Sculptural pair of American lightning rods dating from the 1870's. They still maintain their original copper skin on its wrought iron twist rod staff which by now has developed a beautiful verdigris patina. One has a sunburst finial and the other has a forked barb finial. Both accomplish their intended purpose of discouraging birds from taking rest! The iron tripod stands both have their two original glass conductors through which the corkscrew rod passes. The bases are simple pine boards for stability. This can be painted or clad in metal or even replaced with hefty slabs of lucite. I see these on either side of a fireplace. They are at once Americana, folk art and these in particular look sophisticated enough to bring a little esprit de Giacometti to your eclectic home. Invention of Benjamin Franklin!
