About the Item

After Napoleon came to power in the early 19th century, France resumed the expansionist policy enjoyed by the First French Colonial Empire after the 16th century. The Napoleon-led overseas reign, known as the Second French Colonial Empire, controlled vast regions in the Caribbean and Africa. These doors were originally hand-carved as entry doors (circa 1890) for one of these French territories. Tall (107 inches or just under nine feet) and well-carved, the doors have a unique off-white and cream hue thanks to commensurate age losses to the finish. A large crest comprised of three scrolls enveloping a lozenge-patterned background and a leaf cup can be seen above a shaped opening surrounded by thick ogee molding. Set within the “window” is an elaborate ironwork of scrolls, leaves, and bars forming an open lattice. Much of the original hardware remains, including a knocker on the right door in the shape of a fist gripping a roundel. Large, geometric iron handles are affixed beneath the lattice, rising from a shaped protruding molding. Beneath the handle is a raised cartouche of a segmented ovate leaf surrounding a cabochon, set within multiple layers of molding and surmounting a stepped kick plate. Our French Colonial doors would make fantastic entry doors to an interior courtyard, wine cellar, or between interior rooms.

Pair of Tall 19th Century Chapel Doors from Belgium
Located in Dallas, TX
Hand-carved in Belgium, circa 1860, this 11 foot tall pair of doors (132.88 inches) were recently salvaged from a Belgian chapel. They can be considered of the Gothic style, which is sometimes referred to as “pointed architecture”, because of the prevalence of pointed arches in buildings. Each door is composed of six vertical planks constructed with mortise and tenon joinery. All planks have been adorned with iron pyramid protuberances, placed in a repeating pattern. The planks and iron retain their white paint, now naturally weathered over the years, perfect for those who appreciate original condition. At over 11 feet tall, these 19th century chapel doors...

Pair of Circa 1750 Walnut Wood Entry Doors from Spain
Located in Dallas, TX
Spanish furniture and architecturals of the 18th century, such as this pair of walnut wood entry doors, were highly influenced by French stylings. Hand-carved circa 1750, the doors feature deep, sinuous moldings, reminiscent of the curvaceous motifs seen during the reign of Louis XV. The amazing doors have a rich brown patina that accentuates the charm of the carvings, which are also enhanced by the visible screws used to join the pieces of walnut wood. Comprised of five carved panels per door, each carving is similar: a rough rectangle with rounded ends and barbed counter curves. The three smaller panels are orientated horizontally, surrounding the two larger and vertically arranged panels. A thickly scrolled bronze pull can be seen on each door, also functioning as door knockers (the door on the right has commensurate wear from the pull striking the wood). Because these Spanish entry doors...
