This highly decorated door panel was removed from a deconsecrated monastery sometime in the late 20th century. The dynamic imagery, like most Tibetan iconography is simultaneously bold and complex. The boldness comes from the Tibetan love of bright, saturated colors and the muscular rendering of human and mythological forms. The complexity comes with the specific iconographic symbols and spiritual references in any Tibetan artwork. The Tibetan term for dragon refers to the sound of thunder and any sighting of a dragon is an auspicious sign. The dragon on this panel is surrounded by clouds and is clutching a jewel in each of its three-clawed paws. The jewels are the four wish-fulfilling jewels of the four limbs of magical attainments.
