Sliding Gate with Egyptian-Inspired Design

About the Item

This sliding gate, adorned with Egyptian-inspired motifs, was created around 1880. At the lower section, the panels are decorated with a geometric frieze of openwork X shapes. The verticality of the uprights is emphasized by stylized flowers with long stems, whose bases are hidden by a sequence of leaves, mimicking certain Egyptian capitals or friezes. Two-thirds of the way up, the stems are interrupted by a broken horizontal line reminiscent of the hieroglyph for “water”, possibly alluding to the aquatic domain where lotus flowers thrive. Finally, at the top, three flowers crown each metal stem. Their semicircular corollas, synthesizing the multiplicity of fine petals of the lotus flower, resemble the way they were depicted in ancient Egypt. The gate combines elements of solid bronze (such as the corollas of the lotus flowers) and iron sheathed in brass (notably in the stems of the flowers). The sliding door mechanism remains fully functional.

Fireback Adorned with an Egyptian-Inspired Low-Relief
Located in SAINT-OUEN-SUR-SEINE, FR
The design of this modern fireplace plaque draws inspiration from the art of ancient Egypt. On the left, a man wearing an usekh collar and dressed in a shendyt (the traditional Egyptian loincloth) leans on a staff and converses with a woman facing him, separated from him only by a papyrus plant. The woman also wears a wide usekh collar and a large draped garment that covers only her back, revealing her nudity at the front. She holds a papyrus. The man and woman are connected by overlapping friezes of geometric Egyptian-inspired motifs, echoing the ornamental structure of the usekh collars. The scene was inspired by an Egyptian low-relief decorating the lid of an ivory casket...
