William Hogarth Chinoiserie Door c. 1750

About the Item

A highly decorative rare black Chinoiserie door dating to circa 1750, reclaimed from the London home of the great painter William Hogarth. With its 6 panels to one side and angular proportions, this impressive Japanned mahogany door looks as at home in a period townhouse as it does a more modern setting. The black gloss finish is finely hand painted with a range of Chinoiserie inspired motifs and oriental scenes including figures, buildings and trees. A door of this design, size and condition is extremely rare and quite the find for those looking to add a unique and impressive piece into their home. Chinoiserie Chinoiserie, from the French ‘Chinois’ meaning Chinese, was a style inspired by art and design from China, Japan, and other Asian countries in the 18th century. It largely relied on craftsmanship and style rather than accurate portrayals of oriental motifs. Chinoiseries height in Britain dated from 1750 to 1765.

Pair of Circa 1750 Walnut Wood Entry Doors from Spain
Located in Dallas, TX
Spanish furniture and architecturals of the 18th century, such as this pair of walnut wood entry doors, were highly influenced by French stylings. Hand-carved circa 1750, the doors feature deep, sinuous moldings, reminiscent of the curvaceous motifs seen during the reign of Louis XV. The amazing doors have a rich brown patina that accentuates the charm of the carvings, which are also enhanced by the visible screws used to join the pieces of walnut wood. Comprised of five carved panels per door, each carving is similar: a rough rectangle with rounded ends and barbed counter curves. The three smaller panels are orientated horizontally, surrounding the two larger and vertically arranged panels. A thickly scrolled bronze pull can be seen on each door, also functioning as door knockers (the door on the right has commensurate wear from the pull striking the wood). Because these Spanish entry doors...
