Antique French bed warmer was a common item throughout the world, where the winters were cold and especially so in Europe. Generally, they were fitted with a handle and shaped like a skillet, with a perforated lid. You would fill the antique bed warmer with river stones that you preheated from the fireplace and placed in the bed.
