About the Item

A very good example of a country candle box that could be found in many country cottages during 18th Century England. This is a particularly good example, not fussy, but utilitarian in its construction. The piece is made of solid elm that has developed a beautiful rich colour and patination. The piece would have been made by the local village carpenter and is nailed together with old iron nails, with the nice original detail of a simple iron catch to the hinged top. It has a shaped top to the back, with a worn hole for wall hanging. All original and genuine country piece with no repairs or alterations and beautiful natural rich colour from 200 years of hand polishing. The use of elm with its characteristic grain pattern lifts this piece above those normally seen.
