Fireback Adorned with an Egyptian-Inspired Low-Relief

About the Item

The design of this modern fireplace plaque draws inspiration from the art of ancient Egypt. On the left, a man wearing an usekh collar and dressed in a shendyt (the traditional Egyptian loincloth) leans on a staff and converses with a woman facing him, separated from him only by a papyrus plant. The woman also wears a wide usekh collar and a large draped garment that covers only her back, revealing her nudity at the front. She holds a papyrus. The man and woman are connected by overlapping friezes of geometric Egyptian-inspired motifs, echoing the ornamental structure of the usekh collars. The scene was inspired by an Egyptian low-relief decorating the lid of an ivory casket found when Tutankhamun’s tomb was discovered in 1922. The scene depicts Tutankhamun and his sister and wife Ankhesenamun in a garden; the latter offers her husband lotus flowers, which he receives with his hand facing forward. The positions of the figures are identical, as is their clothing, despite the greater ornamental simplicity and stylization on our plaque. Thus, the style and subject of a 14th-century B.C.E. Egyptian bas-relief, surprisingly modern in appearance, served as a source of inspiration for this 20th-century fireback. Aknowledgements : Mr. and Mrs. Weijland.
