About the Item
18th-19th century French neoclassical period fireback with fasces. Fasces are a bundle of rods tied around an axe, which was a symbol carried by lictors in ancient Rome to signify the authority and power of a magistrate. This symbol has been used throughout history to represent legal authority and the power of the state. In a broader sense, fasces have also been adopted in various symbols and emblems around the world, including in the architecture of American government buildings and on the insignia of various police and military groups, to signify governance, authority, and sometimes unity and strength.
The fireback is made of cast iron. It has a natural brown patina. Upon request it can be made black / pewter at no extra cost. The fireback is in a good condition and does not have cracks.
