Antique French Louis XVI Limestone Fireplace with Geometric Carvings

About the Item

This beautiful French fireplace is carved from hard limestone. The frieze is decorated with an ancient geometrical Greek Meander pattern. Meander of meandros is a decorative border constructed from a continuous line, shaped into a repeated motif. It is also known as the Greek fret or the Greek key. The Meander is carved in the stone and was made black. The fireplace has straight legs decorated with tapered panels on the front. The fireplace breaks down in five pieces, the top frieze, two retour moldings, and two support legs or jambs. The fireplace is made in from nice softened limestone from the Burgundy area and has great patina. Opening firebox measurements: 42.52 inches wide and 29.72 inches high.
