About the Item

This extraordinary original antique fireplace mantel, carved in 1857 in Beaune, Burgundy, is a rare and historically anchored artefact from France’s Second Empire under Napoleon III. Its maker, H. Duplain, signed and dated the piece on the left side of the fronton — offering a clear, authentic timestamp of craftsmanship and provenance. Carved entirely from local Corton hard limestone, celebrated for its warm ochre-red hue and subtle veining, the mantel exudes the grandeur and permanence typical of mid-19th-century Burgundy architectural elements. 🛠️ Design & Craftsmanship: The mantel features a classically structured entablature with refined fluting on the pilasters and strong geometric framing. A bold central carving of symbolic civic tools — an axe, fasces, and roundel — evoke strength, order, and authority, hallmarks of the Second Empire aesthetic. The surface carries a rich patina, accumulated over more than 160 years, enhancing its authenticity and timeworn elegance. 🖋️ Signature and Historical Inscription: * Left Side of Fronton:
Clearly signed “H. Duplain 1857”, probably denoting the artisan and year of production. Although little is published about H. Duplain, the craftsmanship and signature suggest a regional stonemason or sculptor of notable skill working during the Second Empire. * Right Side of Fronton:
Inscribed “Besancenot” — an unmistakable link to the Besancenot family, a renowned winegrowing dynasty from Beaune that began producing wine in 1850 and continues to this day. This likely marks the fireplace as a bespoke commission for the Besancenot estate or residence, offering an exceptionally rare fusion of oenological and architectural heritage. * The grand dimensions and architectural integrity make this a striking centrepiece for a wine estate restoration, château salon, or elegant contemporary residence. 🏛️ Historical Note for Buyers: * This mantel is not only a design object but a piece of French cultural heritage—its inscriptions link it directly to the Second Empire period, and to a family central to the wine legacy of Beaune. A rare acquisition for collectors, designers, and French wine lovers and wine estate restorers alike. 📏 Dimensions: 190,5 cm Exterior Width 75 Inch 120 cm Exterior Height 47,24 Inch 163 cm Interior Width 64,17 Inch 116 cm Interior Height 45,67 Inch 31 cm Depth Shelve 12,2 Inch 34 cm Depth Shelve+ 13,39 Inch 72 cm Depth Jambs 28,35 Inch 745 Kg
