A large and incredibly well carved antique Italian Carrara marble fireplace in the Renaissance style
Made in Venice during the middle of the 19th century in the Renaissance revival style.
The coloured Portoro marble pilasters are under intricately carved capitals and corbels, the frieze is profusely carved with vines, leaf’s, grapes, foliage, centred by swan, a symbol of purity, elegance, and perfection.
A large one piece break-fronted cornice shelf, carved with leaf work and bead and reel motifs, rests on top.

This revival style was particularly influential in the 19th and early 20th centuries, with buildings built in this style often incorporating elements of Renaissance architecture while also adapting to the needs of the time.

The serpentine shaped frieze has incredibly fine carvings of fabulous Renaissance ornament. The centre cartouche is upheld by male figures terminating in scrolling acanthus leaf’s, these flanked by dragons amongst foliage and female figures on each of the curved corners.
The frieze upheld by highly carved baluster shaped pedestals on Rosso Verona jambs.
Made from Pietra d’Istria marble and Rosso Verona marble.
Photographed in un-restored original condition, can be cleaned if preferred,
circa 1830
Provenance: Talygarn house in Wales, rebuilt during the 19th century by George Thomas Clarke, industrialist, ironmaster for Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
