Mid-19th Century French Neoclassical Giallo di Siena Marble Fireplace Surround

About the Item

A very fine mid-19th Century French neoclassical fireplace surround in golden vibrant Convent Giallo di Siena marble. A deep rectangular shelf with an edged moulding gracefully rests on an elegant framed high relief carved frieze showing full length leaf tendrils. Below, a moulded framed fire opening flanked by end blocks of circular paterae supported by disengaged tapered stop fluted columns surmounted with Ionic capitals and volutes, all supported on egg and dart stylobates and plain block socles. French, circa 1840 Fire opening size: 1045mm wide x 845mm high. Overall base foot width 1400mm This piece qualifies for free worldwide delivery if purchased at the full listed price. Convent Giallo di Siena marble is mined from Provincia di Siena, Toscana, Italy. The famous egg yolk marble of Siena had been used extensively all across Italy and France, since at least the 16th century. The best stone come from the Senese Mountains and is the most highly prized of all the Siena marbles and can be dark or pale yellow in appearance. The name Convent derives from the Convent of Montarrenti which used to own the lands on which the stone was quarried. The marble in this antique fireplace almost certainly comes from there with small clasps of deep violet matrix. Major uses: The U.S. Supreme Court in Washington D.C. has twenty four columns of Siena marble in the inner court chamber.
