Splendid Antique 18th Century Kilkenny Marble Bolection Fire

About the Item

A spectacular antique chimneypiece carved from Kilkenny marble. A remarkable surround that is truly unique. The handsome 18th-century fireplace surround is comprised of a simple bolection design that is complemented by the dramatic contrast that the Kilkenny marble delivers. Kilkenny marble is deep black with bright white fossil inclusions exposed throughout. The City of Kilkenny is often referred to as "The Marble City", its pavements are lined with this dark marble that when wet, glistens and becomes even more opulent. Because of the understated, robust aesthetic, the surround would work well in both a period property or a contemporary setting.
