About the Item

This magnificent chimneypiece is carved from fine statuary marble with contrasting inlaid thumbnails of dark Rosso Lavanto across the frieze. The signature motifs, expert craftsmanship and provenance lead us to believe it is original William Kent. The frieze is centred by a plaque boldly carved with a mask of Apollo surrounded by a sunburst. The outer aperture is edged with delicately carved decals. The architectural rarity was reclaimed from the Clothworkers Hall London. After a devasting fire caused by an air raid (which destroyed most of the building in the 1940s), many of the wealthy patrons of the Clothworkers donated money and pieces to help bring the building back and hall to it's former grandeur. The piece has been gently restored in house. The Clothworkers Company is one of the Great Twelve Livery Companies of London, it has been on the site of 50 Fenchurch Street since the Company was founded in 1528. As wool was one of England's main sources of wealth, The Clothworkers' was originally established to regulate the finishing of woven woollen cloth within the City of London, as years passed the remit of the company evolved into more charitable activities. Due to destruction over the years from the 1666 Great Fire of London to WW2 bombing, the current Hall is the sixth on the site.
