Chamberlain & Co Dove in Starburst Encaustic Tile Panel
About the Item
A complete and incredibly rare mid 19th century decorative tile panel of a dove in starburst, made up of sixteen 6-inch glazed encaustic tiles by Chamberlain & Co (stamped). Likely unique, these reclaimed tiles date from circa 1850 and are in good condition for their age with only small chips and wear to the surface from previous use.
Supplied loose, these encaustic tiles sit together to form a central, buff-toned dove with wings spread before a dramatic starburst roundel on an encaustic red backdrop. Having stood the test of time for over 175 years, this decorative panel is a true antique and a stunning piece for a collector of tiles made by British manufacturers of times gone by.
Chamberlain Tiles of Worcester
Walter Chamberlain had been manufacturing works of porcelain from 1788. But it wasn’t until 1840 that the company traded as ‘Chamberlain & Co.’ following the merge of the two rival Worcester firms Chamberlain and Flight, Barr & Barr. Following Walter Chamberlain’s retirement in 1851, the works were run by Kerr & Binns. In 1862, the firm became known as the Worcester Royal Porcelain Company.
