Japanese antique Kannon stone statue/Edo period/18th to 19th century

About the Item

Introducing a stone Buddha of Nyoirin Kannon, created in the mid to late Edo period (circa 1750-1850). The material used is granite or andesite, and the natural weathering of the stone quietly tells of the passage of time. In Buddhism, Nyoirin Kannon is a bodhisattva symbolizing “the power to grant wishes at will” and a compassionate being who accompanies people in all their suffering. Generally characterized by a gentle expression and graceful posture, this stone statue, though simple in form, captures the characteristics of the Buddha. Plump cheeks, gently closed eyes, and a subdued smile--these are the features of the stone Buddha. The contours of the sculpture have faded somewhat over the years, but this only serves to accentuate its serene and soft presence. The overall shape of the statue is a “boat-shaped halo” with an arched back, and the statue of Kannon and the pedestal are carved as one piece. The statue of Kannon and the pedestal are carved as one piece. The weathered stone skin gives a sense of symbiosis with nature and would fit well in an outdoor setting. At 48 cm high, 30.6 cm wide, and 19.8 cm deep, this stone Buddha is moderately sized and weighs only about 31.55 kg, within the range of one person's carrying capacity. It is not too large, but has enough presence to transform the atmosphere of a place just by placing it gently at an entrance or in a corner of a garden. For example, if placed in the shade of a tree or next to a moss-covered stone in a garden, it will bring tranquility and charm into your daily life, as if you were visiting an ancient temple. Also, when placed in a modern space, the solid form and materiality of the chandelier will add an exquisite accent to the interior, harmonizing with both Japanese and Western styles. It would be a delight to place it in a corner of a living room with the lights dimmed and enjoy the way it quietly casts shadows. With a simplicity unique to natural stone and a warm expression nurtured over a long period of time, this stone Buddha has a deep flavor that cannot be found in modern industrial products. It will be a special presence that will gently accompany your space and weave a quiet time together. Notes. Due to the indoor storage, moss and other substances that adhere to the stone may discolor and become easily removed. Please be aware of this in advance. Weight: 31.55kg
