Japanese antique stone lion figurine / 1800-1900 / Edo to Meiji / garden object

About the Item

This is a stone performance lion figurine made in the late 19th century in Japan from the Edo period to the Meiji period. Shishi has been revered as a divine beast since ancient times in Japan, and is still enshrined in temples as a very popular existence. This is very beautiful and I think the lion's body is very well represented. From the movement of the fur, the three-dimensional appearance of the lion's body, and the facial expressions, you can tell that it was carved by a skilled person. A flower is also carved on the body of the lion, which is thought to be a peony flower. Unfortunately, the chin part seems to have been re-glued after being damaged once. Please take a good look at the images. There is also a crack in one place on the back side, but this is a common phenomenon for old stone items, and there is no possibility of damage from this part. Please be assured that viewing will not be affected. And this may have originally existed something like a foundation. This lion is made like a lid. However, this alone has enough charm as an ornament. Since it is small, it can be displayed in the collection room, in the living room, in the entrance, or in the garden. it's recommended.
