Chinese Washing Stone Pedestal, c. 1900

About the Item

Carved in the late 19th century in northern China, this limestone washing stone would have been used by a Qing-dynasty woman for washing clothes and textiles. Used by beating wet fabrics against its smooth surface with a wooden washing stick, washing stones were an integral part of Chinese daily life. Its simple form and broad surface make this washing stone an ideal display stand or garden ornament.
