About the Item

A exquisite pair of antique English Adam style carved giltwood and painted satinwood tripod pedestals embellished with oval hand-painted enameled panels depicting flowers and embellished with ram's head. The pair of antique pedestals is structured in the Adam style, each with a square top supported by tapering, giltwood frames. The pedestals stand on block-form bases, their sides converging toward the top in a trapezoidal profile. The frontal panels are dominated by large oval reserves with painted still-life bouquets in urns, executed on richly grained grounds. These reserves are framed with applied beaded gilt moldings and are integrated into pierced gilt scrollwork ornament. Above each reserve is a semicircular gilt fan motif, and the corners are mounted with prominent ram’s head masks. The upper friezes display repeating floral and anthemion ornament carved in relief, bordered by bead-and-reel patterns. The painted floral reserves are hand-executed, likely oil on a veneered panel, and the giltwood carving reflects techniques consistent with late 18th- to early 19th-century English decorative practices. The ram’s head masks and anthemion bands correspond to recurring motifs used in Adam-style furniture and interiors. No signatures are visible on the painted reserves, but the detailing aligns with decorative panel painting associated with English neoclassical design. The Adam style was developed in England under Robert Adam and his brothers, who introduced a refined neoclassical language influenced by ancient Roman architecture and decoration. Their furniture and interior schemes often included painted panels with floral arrangements, medallions, and classical ornament, paired with light, gilded woodwork. Pedestals such as these were designed to support urns, candelabra, or sculpture, integrating both structural and decorative functions. The combination of painted reserves and applied gilt carving typifies the Adam workshop approach, balancing polychrome decoration with neoclassical form.
