About the Item
A Large Cylindrical Pair of 19th Century Italian Neoclassical Breccia Pernice (Red) Marble Pedestals on Carrara Marble Bases. Each pedestal is hand-carved from a large, single, solid piece of Breccia Pernice Red marble. This particular marble is unusual for its dense nature and beautiful natural rich red color with swirling white, orange, and blue inclusions. As marble is a very dense and sparse stone, it was very difficult to have hand-carved these pedestals in the 1800's. Also mining this marble was increasingly difficult in the 1800's, as sourcing it in Italy was a daunting task and caring it to the sculptors was even more difficult to have it carved. The cylindrical bodies sit on circular and square Carrara marble mounts.
