About the Item

This sculptural pair of shallow concrete planters was designed by Swiss modernist Willy Guhl for Eternit and dates to circa 1950. Each piece is formed in Guhl’s iconic wide saucer shape, cast from fiber-cement, a durable, weather-resistant material that allowed for innovative sculptural forms. The planters exhibit a gently tapered profile with rolled rims and a flat bottom featuring multiple drainage holes. Measuring 31.5 inches in diameter and 9.5 inches high, these low-profile vessels are ideal for succulents, ornamental grasses, or alpine plantings. Both planters retain their original patina, with moss, mineral deposits, and surface weathering that lend authentic vintage character. Stamped with production numbers on the underside, they reflect the timeless elegance of mid-century Swiss design. Willy Guhl (1915–2004) was a leading figure in European modernism and a pioneer of industrial design. Best known for his collaborations with Eternit, Guhl embraced a philosophy of honest materials and sculptural simplicity. His fiber-cement creations—especially planters and the iconic Loop Chair, are now celebrated for their timeless aesthetic and enduring utility. Guhl’s work is highly sought after by collectors and designers for its seamless integration of architecture, nature, and form. Excellent structural condition with wear consistent with age and outdoor use. A rare and collectible pair with strong presence and pedigree.
