About the Item

This rare and striking 1928 Roseville Futura Hanging Planter is a beautiful example of Art Deco American pottery, showcasing the innovative and futuristic aesthetic that defined the Futura line. Designed by Frank Ferrell, one of Roseville’s most influential designers, this conical-shaped planter is adorned with a hand-painted geometric leaf motif in yellow, blue, green, and lavender, set against a soft apricot-colored background. The top rim is finished in a green accent, harmonizing with the Art Deco color palette of the late 1920s. This piece features three evenly spaced holes at the top for secure hanging. The interior of the planter remains exceptionally clean, with visible kiln stilt marks from the original firing process. The exterior exhibits overall crazing, a signature characteristic of vintage Roseville pottery. Additionally, there is a minor glazing defect on a lavender leaf, a common occurrence in hand-glazed pieces of this era. Introduced in 1928, the Futura line was Roseville’s bold foray into Art Deco ceramics, competing with other leading American companies such as Consolidated Glass, Cowan Pottery, and Rookwood. The Futura series was heavily influenced by Egyptian Revival and geometric modernism, a direct response to the worldwide fascination with Egyptology following the discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922. The conical form and stylized leaf patterns reflect this influence, blending ancient motifs with the streamlined elegance of early 20th-century design. Roseville Pottery, founded in 1890 in Zanesville, Ohio, became one of the most iconic and collectible American pottery manufacturers of the early 20th century. Known for its artistic glazes, hand-finished details, and high-quality craftsmanship, the company created some of the most coveted Art Deco ceramic designs. Frank Ferrell, Roseville’s lead designer, played a pivotal role in developing the sculptural, nature-inspired, and futuristic forms that set Roseville apart from its competitors.
