Fine Edwardian Satinwood and Mahogany Paint Decorated Planter
By Angelica Kauffmann
Located in Hudson, NY
This fine painted decorated planter in the manner of Angelica Kauffman was created in England circa 1890 to 1900. Hepplewhite in style the planter was made in England during the Edwardian era. This time saw a great rise in revival styles and culminated with the out break of the first world war. Hepplewhite design is most often associated with fine detail contrasting wood veneers and inlay , delicate painted details and a definite reference to historical precedents. Referencing Kauffman herself the piece is reminiscent of works in her historical painterly style. She i known to have painted a number of commissions on furniture while living in England as well a being one of only two female founding members of the Royal Academy. She classified herself as a painter of historical imagery but is also known for her many significant painting and portraits and scenes of late 18th century upper class life. Many engravings used as pattern survive giving her style and work a great reach in paint decorated furniture...

19th Century French Hand Painted Ceramic Duck Wall Platter Stamped J. Massier
Located in Dallas, TX
This elegant Majolica platter was created in Southern France by Massier, circa 1890. Round in shape, the antique ceramic plate is beautifully hand painted featuring a standing duck in a barn. The planter is in excellent condition with rich colors in the beige, green and white palette. The piece is stamped on the bottom Jerome Massier Fils, Vallauris, Pierre Perret. Hook in the back for easy installation. The Massier family of Vallauris is recognized for three members producing Majolica in the second half of the 19th century. In 1860, brothers Delphin (1836-1907) and Clement (1844-1917) Massier were joined by cousin Jerome Massier (1850-1916) and began producing a style of ceramic bridging between traditional Victorian Majolica and Art Nouveau pottery. The Massiers mastered the copper oxide flambé technique for glazing, thereby introducing an intensely vibrant color palette including red, green and blue hues not previously seen with English Majolica. Important in the Massier production were a series of large naturalistic modeled figural roosters, hens and other birds. Vases and wall pockets styled as orchids, intensely colored irises and sunflowers are among the most common Massier styles. A variety of humorous pieces bearing frogs and songbirds are popular among collectors. Most Massier Majolica bears...

19th Century French Barbotine Jardiniere with Gros Relief Flowers
Located in Dallas, TX
The skill and knowledge that was needed to make this beautiful 19th century French barbotine jardiniere is significant. Each of the gros relief flowers was painstakingly formed and painted by hand. Barbotine products are a mixture of Kaolin clay and water and in the case of the attached flowers, they are manipulated into paper-thin fineness. Once the flowers were colored, they were affixed to the side of the jardiniere, glazed, and fired. Any miscalculation during the firing process would result in a restart, negating months of hard work. It is difficult to find an intact barbotine with gros relief flowers due to the fragility. The jardiniere has been painted using gradient colors, with black at the top and golden brown at the molded base. In between those hues is a mottled black and brown background that extends up to the curled volute handles. Blue, pink, yellow, and orange gros relief flowers with attached greenery have been applied over the speckled area. Our barbotine jardiniere with gros relief flowers can be used as originally intended, as a small indoor planter...

Antique Hand Carved Gothic Column Stand with Saint Luke, Mark & John Sculptures
Located in Lisse, NL
One of a kind and meaningful, Gothic Revival pedestal / planter / candle holder. Finding unique antiques that are unlike anything we ever saw always makes us feel grateful. When we first saw this large, entirely handcrafted and handcarved column we thought it was a church pedestal for displaying a saint sculpture on top. However, when we noticed the open top with the zinc, removable liner inside, we realized this was in fact a Gothic Revival plant stand with a possibility to also have a sculpture on display in the middle section. Thanks to the zinc liner this beautiful workmanship antique can also be used as a candle stand (as shown in some of our photos), creating a marvelous atmosphere with the burning candles behind the Gothic carvings around the hexagonal top. At the base of this unique stand are three handcarved sculptures of a winged bull (symbolizing Saint Luke...
