About the Item

Francis John Williamson (British, 1833-1920), circa 1884. An impressive cast stone sculpture by renowned British portrait sculpture Francis John Williamson. This finely cast and sculpted piece depicts the royal family baby Princess Alice of Albany with sheepskin and stool. The piece is inscribed "J. Williamson Sc Esher 1884". This model was also featured in "The Graphic" as an illustration, Volume XXX, no 766, August 2nd, 1884. Sculptor Francis Williamson was trained by John Bell, through him meeting the sculptor J.H. Foley. Williamson went to work for Foley, and stayed in his studio for most of the next two decades, first as student, then as assistant. Williamson was patronized by Queen Victoria, and produced a many statues of her. His other work is mainly portrait statues and busts, including memorials. Francis John Williamson's work is held in many important collections and museums including the National Portrait Gallery in London, the National Galleries of Scottland, several public statues including an important bust of Queen Victoria. His work has also come up for auction at Christies and achieved impressive numbers. Provenance: From an important Newport RI estate.

  • Condition:
    Repaired. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. This statue is in overall good condition, however, the left half of the stool is missing. According to the estate, the stool portion was damaged while being transported from Europe in the 60's.
