About the Item

A wonderful pair of Chinese carved granite foo dogs originally from "Juanita", the Gurdon Wallace Wattles estate in Hollywood, Ca. and then moved to another family home in Amenia , N.Y. The Hollywood property and its gardens ( now a public garden) was built during 1910/1911. I recently read a dealer comment that " they aren't hung up on things like provenance ". What a pity . For us , it is just the opposite ; we feel fortunate and proud to caretake these and other items from this estate until the next owner takes over. Gurdon Wallace Wattles was born in 1855 and died in 1932 . " He was an early businessman , banker and civic leader in Omaha , who later became responsible for bank rolling much of early Hollywood ". In 1908 he traveled extensively around the world acquiring furniture and objets along the way . He visited China on this trip and it is supposed that he acquired these foo dogs on that trip. There is available the autobiography of Gurdon Wallace Wattles and having read only some of it on the internet , it is quite fascinating. He was a colleague of and friends with F.D.R and Herbert Hoover . We have on loan a photograph of the gardens which show these foo dogs in situ , flanking a staircase that descends from an Asian syle arbor. { The photo now belongs to a client who purchased the marble bench from this estate but she has graciously loaned it to us.} They might have been manufactured for him at this time or they may be older than the date of 1908. Granite is quite difficult to date. Please note the magnificent " muscled " carving and that although they are a true pair , there are differences such as the open / closed mouths.

Pair of Monumental Carved Stone Garden Fruit Basket from Famed Vouziers Mansion

Pair of unique monumental hand-carved stone garden fruit basket from famed Vouziers Mansion Florissant, Missouri. The French Country Chateau Vouziers was built in 1926 on a 250 acre estate for Magnet Joseph Desloge, part of the oldest French families in the USA. These Baskets were commissioned for the residence and imported from France. Each basket is unique and has it's own base. Stone has patina, appear to have been cleaned. Minor loss, see photos. Additional documentation is available. Limestone bases are 23.5" H x 27.5" W. Baskets are (need to measure). These were purchase from the estate of Joseph Desloge's daughter, Anne Desloge Werner Bates, and confirmed by her son and daughter that they were moved upon the sale of Vouziers in the 1970s to Anne's residence that was part of the Vouziers 250 acre estate.
