Large Antique Indian Hindu Temple Nandi Bull Bronze Copper Alloy Statue
Located in Forney, TX
A large and most impressive antique Indian early bronze copper alloy Hindu temple vahana statue / sculpture. India, likely Deccan region, 16th-19th century, exceptionally executed figural work depicting Nandi Bull (devine steer / mythical horned cow), a significant figure in Hinduism, vehicle (mount) of diety Lord Shiva, symbol of devotion, and an important part of Hindu culture and philosophy. This rare high quality example, heavy, nearly solid, in stylized Brahman bull animal form, the naturalistic rendering with meticulous attention to authentic detail throughout, including proper facial features and comprehensive muscular structure, beaded jewelry decoration, natural looking horns, utter and teats, curved tail, and integral hoof feet. Attractive antique metalwork with warm alloy tonal variations, ehanced by beautifully aged worn weathered heavily patinated bronze & copper alloy accented by scattered visually striking verdigris bluish green patina. Dimensions: (approx) 24" Tall, 29" Wide, 11" Deep Probably 70lbs Ideal for both indoor and outdoor use History: NANDI: THE DIVINE STEED AND SYMBOL OF DEVOTION Introduction In the rich tapestry of Hindu mythology, few figures carry the depth of symbolism and spiritual significance as Nandi, the divine bull. As the sacred mount of Lord Shiva, Nandi occupies a revered place in Hindu culture and philosophy. In this blog post, we will delve into the multifaceted significance of Nandi, exploring the spiritual, cultural, and symbolic dimensions that make this celestial creature an indispensable part of the Hindu pantheon. The Vahana of Lord Shiva: Nandi's most prominent role is that of the vahana, or vehicle, of Lord Shiva, one of the principal deities in Hinduism. In this capacity, Nandi is not just a physical mount but a symbol of unwavering devotion and loyalty. The inseparable bond between Lord Shiva and Nandi signifies the importance of humility, obedience, and dedication on the spiritual path. Symbol of Strength and Virility: Depicted as a powerful and muscular bull, Nandi embodies strength and virility. The bull is a symbol of fertility and abundance in Hindu culture, representing the life-sustaining forces of nature. Nandi's robust form serves as a reminder of the inherent power within all living beings and the vital energy that sustains the universe. Guardian of Shiva's Abode: In many Shiva temples, one often encounters a prominent statue of Nandi positioned at the entrance. This is not merely decorative; it is symbolic of Nandi's role as the gatekeeper to Lord Shiva's abode. Devotees believe that Nandi safeguards the sanctity of the sacred space and acts as a spiritual protector, warding off negative energies. A Beacon of Spiritual Discipline: Nandi's demeanor and presence are reflective of spiritual discipline and meditation. Often depicted in a state of deep contemplation, Nandi serves as an inspiration for seekers on the spiritual path. The bull's stillness and focused gaze symbolize the importance of inner reflection and concentration as essential components of the journey toward self-realization. Cultural and Artistic Significance: Beyond its spiritual and religious connotations, Nandi holds immense cultural and artistic significance. Sculptors and artists across centuries have crafted intricate depictions of Nandi, showcasing the depth of Hindu artistic heritage. The various poses and expressions of Nandi in art not only tell stories from mythology but also contribute to the aesthetic richness of temples and cultural artifacts. Festivals and Celebrations: Nandi is also celebrated in festivals like Maha Shivaratri, where devotees pay homage to Lord Shiva and his divine mount. During these festivities, the spiritual significance of Nandi is magnified, with rituals, prayers, and processions that honor the inseparable bond between the bull and the lord. Conclusion: In conclusion, Nandi is far more than a mythical creature or a decorative element in Hindu iconography. As the loyal steed of Lord Shiva, Nandi symbolizes profound spiritual truths, embodying qualities of devotion, strength, and discipline. Whether gracing the entrance of a temple or adorning the altar in a devotee's home, the significance of Nandi extends beyond religious boundaries, touching the hearts and minds of those who seek inspiration on their spiritual journey. The divine presence of Nandi serves as a timeless reminder of the enduring values that enrich the human experience. Pair of French 19th Century Lifesize Cast-Iron Sculpture Torcheres, Val d'Osne
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A superb quality and palatial pair of French 19th century lifesize cast-iron sculptures - torcheres of Native American Indians titled "L’ Indienne" designed by Jules Salmson (French, 1823-1902) and Cast by Le Fonderies d'Art du Val d'Osne, each standing figure representing a Native American Indian male and a female scantily dressed in their native robes, one arm raised holding a light-torch with an opaline glass globe, both wearing earrings, seashell necklaces and arm-braces, raised on cylindrical cast-iron stand. 19th Century over Life-Size Marble Statue of Bacchus after Michelangelo
Located in Essex, MA
Mid-19th century over life-size carved marble statue of Michelangelo's "Bacchus". Grand Tour copy through the "Point To Point" method directly from the original keeping its masterful proportions and Fine details in an exact size to Michelangelo's work. We have never seen a 19th century copy of this Renaissance Masterpiece of this size and are quite fortunate to be responsible for its stewardship until purchase by a discerning collector The original "Bacchus" is a marble sculpture by the master, Michelangelo, created circa 1496 when the artist was 21. This statue was originally commissioned by Cardinal Raffaele Riario. However, it was rejected by him and eventually found its way to Jacopo Galli, Cardinal Riario’s banker and a friend of the sculptor, who purchased it in 1506. Some 66 years later it was bought for the Medici and transferred to the royal house in Florence, Italy. Currently it can be viewed at the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence. It is one of just two sculptures surviving Michelangelo’s initial period in Rome, with the other being Pieta. The artwork: This somewhat oversized...

Fine Italian Early 19th Century Marble Group of Bacchus and Ariadne After the An
Located in Benington, Herts
Extremely fine marble group of Bacchus and Ariadne after the antique attributed to Carlo Albacini (1734 – 1813) Italy Rome circa 1800 Provenance A French Private Collection Carved in the round of white marble, the young couple shown walking and apparently exchanging words, his left arm gently wrapped around her shoulder, upholding part of her drapery, a wreath of fruit-bearing vines placed on his head, while hers shows no berries, from her right shoulder suspended a suggestive skin of a goat. In excellent condition having a restoration on Ariadne's left index finger. This finely carved sculptural group is one of a number of known examples of this subject, all inspired by a Greco-Roman classical original 1st and 2nd centuries A.D which is now in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston (inv.68.770). Demonstrating the beginning of Bacchus' courtship of Ariadne and illustrates the “Return to Antiquity” which was expressed in numerous archaeological works in Rome at the end of the 18th Century. The subject matter made it perfect for a wide variety of settings and fine copies of the subject which survive in such collections as the Rothschilds at Waddesdon Manor, the Pitti Palace in Florence, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes, the Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique and the National Trust property Erddig in Wales. This marble is exemplary of neoclassical aesthetics, by its ancient origin and by the creativity of the sculptor who perfectly links these two figures in the manner of Antonio Canova's standing groups (see Daedalus and Icarus or Venus and Adonis). This marble represents a moment of tender complicity illustrating the ability of neoclassical sculptors to detach themselves from ancient rigour in order to introduce an ideal of softness into their works. These two figures are not simply next to each other, but marry through the fusion of their drapes, through the play of glances and through the embracing gesture of Bacchus. Of the surviving 18th and early 19th century examples of this group, the finest are signed by or attributed to the Italian master Carlo Albacini (1734-1813). Albacini was a restorer of ancient marbles who worked extensively on such aristocratic assemblages as the Charles Townley collection, later to form the basis of the fine sculpture collections at the British Museum, whilst also creating copies of these antique pieces for his elite clientele. Aside from Townley, one of the most interesting and important English collectors of this period was the Earl of Bristol who had a fine house in Naples, a London townhouse and his Suffolk family seat Ickworth which he intended to fill with exceptional examples of art of all kinds. Bristol was a great patron of Italian artists and a chimneypiece from his collection that was supplied for his Italian home and later fitted at Ickworth was sold at Sotheby's on the 26th of November 2003 lot 87. This exceptionally carved chimneypiece...

"Galata Morente" Sculpture in Bronze, sign: F. Barbedienne Fonduer
Located in Ciudad Autónoma Buenos Aires, C
F. Barbedienne fonduer Ferdinand Barbedienne (6 August 1810 – 21 March 1892) was a French metalworker and manufacturer, who was well known as a bronze founder. The son of a small farmer from Calvados, he started his career as a dealer in wallpaper in Paris. In 1838 he went into partnership with Achille Collas (1795-1859), who had just invented a machine to create miniature bronze replicas of statues. Together they started a business selling miniatures of antique statues from museums all over Europe, thus democratising art and making it more accessible to households.[2] From 1843 they extended their scope by reproducing the work of living artists and also diversified by making enamelled household objects. With the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian war in 1870 the firm briefly had to switch to cannon founding owing to the shortage of metals but resumed business afterwards. Following Barbedienne's death in 1892, he was buried in the Père-Lachaise cemetery and the firm was carried on by his nephew Gustave Leblanc until 1952. Among the principal artists reproduced by the firm were Antoine Louis Barye and Auguste Rodin. The Dying Galata (Italian: Galata morente...
