About the Item
This vintage marble bathing bowl features hand-carved details that transport one back to the communal bathhouses of the Ottoman Empire, called hamams. This piece features an oval basin, blunt edges, and two front ears.
Marble bathing bowls have been used in Ottoman-style bathhouses for generations, providing a central source of cleansing water. Inside the Kurna ("Basin Room"), bathers use smaller copper hamam bowls to draw water from these marble basins, for more specific cleansing tasks. Bathing was an important part of every Anatolian's week, and remains a regular tradition today. Hamams are a place to cleanse, physically and spiritually, and to connect with community.
