About the Item

This large Italian fruit and floral urn would make an impressive garden ornament. Standing over 42 inches tall, the composite stone has a light gray hue with accents of cream, white, and dark gray. The billowing finial is comprised of a fruit bouquet of bananas, grapes, and pears, dotted with flowers. A similar composition makes up the swag that encircles the bulbous urn along the thickest area. Beneath the fruit and floral drapery is an acanthus leaf cup that arises from the neck. Supported by a circular foot with a thick quarter-round edge, our large Italian garden urn can be displayed as is, although it would look even more majestic atop a pedestal or column.

Standing over 45 inches tall, this well-carved limestone planter or fountain element would have a commanding presence in any landscape installation. Hand-carved in Italy in two sections (the basin is separate from the column/plinth section), a central drainage hole runs through both sections, allowing it to be plumbed for a fountain, either as a spill bowl or with a vertical jet. The basin is six inches tall and has a diameter of almost 30 inches and is adorned with two layers of gadroon separated by a deep cavetto cornice. Interestingly, the bottom ring of lobes terminates beneath a large, attenuated leaf that can be seen under the basin. The beautifully carved basin is supported by an equally impressive, fluted column above a bulbous third section of gadroon. A thickly molded circular plinth with a large leaf cup offers stability and additional aesthetic appeal. The light gray stone has developed a mottled white, gold, and black patina with green and brown moss/lichen accumulation. After the original 18th century garden vases, entitled Autumn, by Jean-Baptiste Pigalle, this pair of large cast garden vases are in the classic krater form. A sprawling scene with mascarons, rams’ heads, and grapevines are set between egg and dart molding and gadrooned lobes. Made with a mixture of crushed stone and cement (known as reconstituted stone), the tall vases were imbued with a cream coloring agent during the casting process.
