Pair 19th Century French Napoleon III Period Iron Garden Urns

About the Item

Pair 19th Century French Napoleon III Period Iron Garden Urns still show the aged forest green painted finish that was popular during the era, along with a century and a half of patina and character! Such urns were prized possessions of homeowners who could maintain a solarium or small garden. During the reign of France's last monarch, a neoclassical revival was enjoyed, bringing back the designs of ancient Greece, Rome and even Egypt ~ hence the timeless form and proportion of this lovely pair. Starting with the lid, which features a prominent knob on top encircled by stylized scrollworks, shell and foliate motifs. The fact the lids remain intact with the urns is actually uncommon. The main attraction, however, appears on the body of the urn below, with a full relief cameo of a lovely young maiden on an oval frame flanked by olive branches with ripening berries. The urns are set upon a graceful base featuring an inverted lotus blossom motif in the round, then upon a squared lower base for extra stability. Ideal for indoors or outdoors!
