About the Item

Magnificent historic Tiffany Studios framed window, "Crusader", a Warrior Knight, after the 1460 work by Italian Renaissance painter Andrea Mantegna (1431-1506). Incorporating a harmonious blend of chunk, stained, layered, painted and rippled glass, the latter traditionally reserved for angel wings (traditionally reserved for angel wings) with a lower inscription "I have fought a good fight. I have finished my course", c1890. The background with a winding road leading to a walled hilltop city, a symbolic depiction of the Celestial Jerusalem, referencing a fortified city from the Book of Revelation. The garland with symbolism, incorporating themes of victory, resurrection, and the triumph of good, inspired by ancient Roman art, was a signature of Mantegna's work during his time in Padua. The Chi and Rho monogram within the upper arch, one of the earliest and most important symbols for Christ with the first two letters of ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ (Christos), the Greek word for "Christ" and the circle representing the eternity of God and the cosmos. Also suggested, inspiration by works depicting Jeanne d'Arc (Joan of Arc). The window, originally designed for, adorned, and recently rescued (2024) from a historic church which was being repurposed into a community center just outside of Corning, New York.
