About the Item

An antique stained glass window of St Edward. This dramatic stained glass window reads ‘St Edward’ paired with religious crests to either side while the night sky surrounds the religious figure. Competently painted, this window is a stunning and detailed interior feature inspired by the saint. The vivid colours would look striking flooded with daylight in a traditional home, a sympathetically decorated converted chapel or ecclesiastical building. St Edward King Edward, also known as Edward the Confessor, ruled between 1042 to 1066. This affluent figure was renowned for his generosity and piety, considered a gentle and devoted ruler. Edward spent almost half his life in Normandy; here he made a vow of chastity, served at masses and developed the reputation of having a saintly character. He was canonised in 1161 and become known as Edward the Confessor, meaning he was a saint who did not die a martyr’s death but whose life proclaimed their faith. In commemoration of this affluent figure, St Edward’s feast day is on October 13th. Addition information Currently housed in a temporary wooden frame – the overall dimensions are for the stained glass only, not the frame.

Large 19th Century Ecclesiastical Stained Glass Window
Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
A large antique late 19th century Ecclesiastical style stained glass window signed by Ward & Hughes, London, 1890. This window is of excellent artistry, with each tiny detail hand painted by a late 19th century artist. The stained glass depicts a religious scene, thought to be Joseph being visited by one of the Lord’s angels in a dream. The angel told Joseph to not be afraid and take Mary home as his wife, because what was conceived in her was from the Holy Spirit. The angel said they will call their son Jesus because he was to save his people from their sins. A piece of art showcasing such religious meaning, only deserves to be pride of place inside a home or property - perhaps even a new addition to a church or chapel. Ward & Hughes, London Ward & Hughes, based in Frith St, Soho, London, proved to be one of the most successful stained glass studios of its time, known for its distinctive style. It was initially a partnership between Thomas Ward and James Henry Nixon...
