Wedgwood Jasper-Dip Pierced Orange Basket

About the Item

One of Wedgwood’s most acclaimed “useful wares,” this fine jasper-dip pierced orange basket displays a brilliant cobalt blue and white checkerboard pattern in the firm’s classic “biscuit” finish. The bowl and lid’s striking “pierced” latticework motif is designed to reveal whole citrus fruits, popular delicacies of the 18th and 19th centuries. Exotic varieties of oranges, lemons and limes were a favorite dessert of the affluent English upper classes, fashionably displayed with intricate designs carved into their peels. Queen Charlotte adored Wedgwood’s pierced orange basket, skyrocketing the popularity of this ultra-stylish mode of showcasing wealth in the late 18th century. Wedgwood soon added this design to their famed Queensware line, made specifically for the Queen of England. Circa 1840 Stamped "WEDGWOOD" Measures: 7" wide x 7” deep x 9" high Provenance: The Starr Collection.
