About the Item

First Period Worcester Porcelain Pine Cone Pattern Junket Dish, Circa 1770 This circular bowl known as a junket dish is a quintessential example of First Period Worcester porcelain, dating from the Dr. Wall era (1751-1783). Executed in a vibrant underglaze blue, it features the intricate and highly sought-after "Pine Cone" pattern. The central design is a composition of Rococo and Chinoiserie influences, blending exotic and naturalistic motifs. It is skillfully transfer-printed with a dense arrangement of stylized pine cones, various fruits, and lush flowers, all interwoven with delicate foliage. The scene is brought to life by the inclusion of several fluttering butterflies, adding a sense of movement and grace. The gently scalloped rim is adorned with smaller, complementary floral sprays, creating a harmonious and balanced design. Dimensions: 9 3/4 inches diameter x 3 1/8 inches high. Mark: Crescent. Provenance: Private Maine Collection What is Junket? Junket is a traditional, old-fashioned, milk-based dessert with a delicate, custard-like texture, made by curdling sweetened and flavored milk with rennet. Rennet, an enzyme found in animal stomachs (or increasingly, plant-based alternatives), causes the milk proteins to coagulate and set without the need for eggs or extensive cooking, resulting in a smooth, creamy, and easily digestible pudding. It's often flavored with nutmeg, vanilla, or other spices and can be served with fruits or cream. Reference: Worcester Porcelain, 1751-1790, the Zorensky Collection, Simon Spero and John Sandon, #541, where the authors write, "Traditionally known as a junket dish, the purpose of the moulded design would give a textured surface to help the junket, a preparation of soured crean and curds, to set. It would appear, however, that the same shape was used for salad.....A similar bowl with moulded scallop shells on a plain background was made at Sèvres as a salad bowl and it is most likely Worcester copied Sèvres for the basic shape."; Worcester Porcelain: The Klepser Collection, by Simon Spero, page 177, #209; Worcester Blue and White Porcelain 1751 - 1790, Branyan, French & Sandon, Page 382, II.C.11.
