Antique Small Mochaware Bowl England Circa 1820

About the Item

Made circa 1820, this lovely mochaware bowl features a horizontal band of three-color cable decoration mixing light brown, black, and white slip on gray ground. The earth tones create a beautiful, warm look. Double bands of dark brown frame the cable decoration. Mochaware is decorated on a lathe* (see Background of Mochaware below). The bowl is made of pearlware, which is creamware with a light cobalt blue glaze. Dimensions: 4.75" diameter at the top x 2.5" diameter at the base x 2.5" tall Condition: Excellent with an original firing line on the underside that can only be seen when the bowl is upside down (see last image) Price: $480 Background of Mochaware: Antique mochaware was decorated on a lathe. Here’s how the lathe was used in the decoration process: The pottery item would be placed on the lathe, and as it spun, colored slip (liquid clay) was applied in bands around the vessel. For mocha designs like our cable decoration, the vessel would continue to spin as acidic solutions mixed with pigment were applied with a fine brush or dropper. Background of Pearlware: Pearlware is a type of pottery known for its smooth, white surface and bluish tint. It was first created in the mid-18th century and became popular around 1780. Pearlware was developed to provide an alternative to Chinese porcelain, which is whiter than creamware. By adding a cobalt-based, blue-tinged glaze to creamware, English potters produced a whiter pottery.
